Rule of Benedict

Benedict of Nursia was a  6th century Christian monk who developed some guidelines for monastic communities. The monastic world was moving from the Desert Father stage to the more orderly communal stage that flourished in the middle ages.

The Rule of Benedict is still in use today and is a very useful  document. Several chapters are reproduced in this encyclopedia. See the essays stage one of monastic purification and practical aspects of monastic purification for more information.

Examples of the personal “rules” followed by New Day Monk leadership can be found by looking at MONASTIC RULE FOR A MONASTERY WITHOUT WALLS.
